The most abundant and cost effective renewable energy resource for the generation of electricity in the Totnes area is wind energy. TRESOC is working in partnership with Infinergy, an established UK wind development company, based in Dorset. We are moving forward with a site near Luscombe Cross, south of Totnes.
This site, of all those researched in the area, offers the greatest potential for commercial wind development, and we have been extremely fortunate to secure an agreement with the owner to develop it. Our goal is to realise a small scale local wind farm of up to two 2.3 MW wind turbines which will provide for the electricity needs of up to 2,500 homes in Totnes via a power line running straight from the site into the town.
The project is moving through the planning process. Community consultation kicked off with an Introduction Day in October of last year. Based on feedback from local residents via comment cards, 61% are supportive of the plans, 17% are undecided and 22% percent are opposed.
The next step in opening up discussions will be to launch a fully updated dedicated website with an online consultation facility.
Bird surveys have been taking place regularly throughout the winter and spring months and bat activity surveys will begin from April onwards. These surveys, undertaken by an independent accredited ecologist, are required to ensure that the site of the proposed wind turbines will not impact any of these important species.
